WELCOME TO LES SPORTS ACADEMY Nike RBI
Since 2010, Lower East Side Sports Academy (LESSA) has enabled youth most in need to lead healthy, safe, smart lives through sports. With a focus on under-served youth from the Lower East Side and Lower Manhattan, LESSA prevents and combats youth obesity and teen violence, by providing programming that will allow participants to succeed in the classroom and on the field-and in life. Today, LESSA impacts local youth by providing affordable after-school, evening, and weekend youth sports programs. LESSA programs provide constructive activity and sports play during crucial non-school hours. LESSA coaches act as mentors, model positive behavior, and serve as moral guides.
Frank Alameda, known as Frankie, is the founder of LESSA. Frank grew up on the Lower East Side and still lives in the neighborhood. Alameda has a huge passion for bringing organized sports to the LES, where, in his view, too many are at risk-either not exposed to positive role models and/or are not learning about healthy lifestyles. "A lot of young people in low income households have some catching up to do when it comes to organized sports. We take those kids who do not even know how to put on a glove and teach them how to be a great team player and how to play ball".
